As the longest running trek at the Gulch, Prairie Trek has an extensive history of bringing young male-identifying 14-16 year olds into challenging and beautiful spaces. PT focuses on further developing identities as members of a greater community, with an emphasis on accountability and mindfulness. This trek links young people with intersecting identities and challenges them to recognize their roles and responsibilities to each other and themselves.

Praise for Cottonwood Gulch Summer Treks

"It's the feeling that it was the first place that I ever felt like myself. That's the thing that continues to pull me back."

David

Prairie Trek

“I think it's better to be a single gender trek because there is less drama and it is easier to be yourself. I would tell my friend to sign up because it is fun and you make great friends.”

Charlie

Prairie Trek

"Just to sit and think was sacred for me - all the people I have met, and that I will never forget. At the end of the day I won't remember all the places we went but I will remember all the people I went with, and the experiences we had."

Tilman

Wild Country Trek

Saying yes to new experience is something I will take with me through life because of the Gulch."

Fareena

Art & Music Trek

"My life has been diverse in pursuit, location and career. I might directly trace those successes to a sense of discovery and person cultivated more than five decades ago at Cottonwood Gulch. My experience as a young trekker in the 1970's was transformative, instilling curiosity, self-confidence, and alliances that have been personal guide stars."

David Kenneth Smith

Former trekker & Staff member

"I realized that failing at something gives you more insight into your strengths and weaknesses than succeeding every time does. It's not an awful thing to know that there's room for improvement and it's never wrong to admit that maybe you need to come back down, and the top just isn't reachable today."

What Makes Prairie Trek 2026 Different?

Wilderness + Science + Culture + Conservation + Community. Not one. All. The Prairie Trek doesn't separate wilderness skills from field science, or outdoor adventure from cultural learning. For a full month, everything connects: the geology you study becomes the canyon you climb; the Navajo families you partner with teach lessons no textbook could; the forests you restore become the ecosystems you understand. This is learning the way it should be—whole, connected, and real.

  • Diverse Ecosystems Deep Dive: From high desert mesas to alpine forests, red rock canyons to mountain peaks—experience the full ecological spectrum of the Southwest
  • Extended Wilderness Immersion: Multi-day backpacking trips (4-6 nights) that take you beyond day-hiking distance
  • Environmental Restoration: Learn regenerative practices and leave landscapes healthier than you found them—conservation isn't just what we do, it's who we are

Alumni & Legacy:
Our 100 years of alumni include Pulitzer Prize finalist Douglas Preston, US Senators Martin Heinrich and Mark Udall, cherished author Kurt Vonnegut, and leaders across science, law, nonprofits, and public service. Friendships that are formed on a Prairie Trek continue to grow long after the last campfire embers have gone out and connect generations.

  • Cultural Immersion: Since 1929, Navajo families have joined Cottonwood Gulch Treks and shared their homeland and perspectives with Prairie Trekkers through multi-day visits and collaborative projects—a relationship with place that's as deep and rich as any outdoor program in the country.
  • Full-Day Adventures: Rock climbing, caving, rappelling, and more—push your limits with expert instruction
  • Single-Gender Environment: At this developmental stage, young men thrive in an all-male setting that fosters authentic vulnerability, leadership growth, and lasting brotherhood

The Prairie Trek doesn't just create memories and new skills.

It creates bonds that last a lifetime.
