Our Mountain Desert Trek 2026 offers a unique opportunity for teens ages 16 to 18 to develop leadership, confidence, and deep outdoor skills while traveling across the American Southwest. As the longest and most challenging trek Cottonwood Gulch offers, Mountain Desert invites older teens into a sustained experience of community, adventure, and personal growth.

In this guide, we explain what sets this trek apart, where trekkers travel, and how families can think about readiness and preparation for this immersive summer program.

Discover Mountain Desert Trek 2026, a 42-day Cottonwood Gulch summer trek for ages 16-18 focused on leadership, adventure, and outdoor confidence.

What Mountain Desert Trek Is All About

Mountain Desert Trek is designed to support emerging young leaders and mentors as they take on greater responsibilities within the Gulch community and beyond. Over the course of 42 days, trekkers internalize core Gulch values including compassion, mindfulness, and competence. Leadership skills are emphasized throughout, and participants are encouraged to serve as role models, work collaboratively through challenge, and reflect deeply on the landscapes and cultures they encounter.

This extended program also centers on building independence and environmental stewardship. Trekkers are invited to think critically about the natural world, to pursue their own learning questions, and to design a personal final project that reflects their insights from the field.

Travel and Landscapes

Mountain Desert Trek treks for over five weeks across some of the most breathtaking and varied landscapes in the Southwest. The itinerary includes up to thirty days on the road, with basecamp used as a launching point for key skills training and preparation. Trekkers explore regions that many programs do not reach, including White Sands and Carlsbad Caverns in Southern New Mexico, Glen Canyon and Grand Staircase-Escalante in Utah, and Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado.

A signature part of the experience is time in the backcountry. Trekking groups undertake several backpacking outings in iconic wilderness areas like Escalante National Monument, Canyonlands National Park, the Grand Canyon, and the Gila National Forest. These trips build resilience, wilderness navigation skills, and confidence in self-sufficiency.

Learning and Leadership Projects

The Mountain Desert Trek emphasizes technical and leadership skills through real adventure, practical learning, and service. Trekkers have the option to earn Wilderness First Aid certification, gaining critical outdoor safety and risk management skills. They also develop expertise in navigation, expedition logistics, and backcountry coordination.

Mentorship is a core element of the program. Participants collaborate to plan and lead a backpacking trip, demonstrating both leadership and a nuanced understanding of safe outdoor travel. These experiences help teens grow confidence, cooperation, and accountability as they take on challenges in a supportive community environment.

Community and Personal Growth

Living in close community for an extended period provides young people with rich opportunities for social growth, self reflection, and meaningful connection. Mountain Desert Trekkers often form strong friendships and learn the importance of communication, cooperation, and empathy. Parents of past trekkers report noticeable increases in maturity, confidence, and resilience when their teens return home ready for the next chapter in their lives.

Safety and Supervision

Mountain Desert Trek is led by experienced outdoor educators trained in wilderness risk management and youth development. All staff hold current Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certifications and our backpacking staff bring extensive backcountry experience to the field. Groups include a 6:1 trekker-to-staff ratio (or better), ensuring close supervision while allowing the independence older teens need to grow. Safety protocols are taught from day one at basecamp, covering navigation, weather awareness, emergency procedures, and group decision-making. While the trek emphasizes leadership and autonomy, staff maintain oversight of all activities, route planning, and group dynamics. With skilled leadership and 100 years of field experience, Cottonwood Gulch creates an environment where your teen will be both challenged and safe.
