A Glimpse Into a Life-Changing Experience
The article highlights something families often hope for when choosing a summer camp for their children or teens.
It is not just about hiking or camping. It is about transformation.
Through time spent outdoors, the author describes developing a deeper awareness of the natural world and a stronger connection to the people around them. Experiences in remote landscapes, shared challenges, and quiet moments in nature all contributed to a shift in how they saw themselves and their place in the world.
This kind of growth is at the heart of the Cottonwood Gulch experience. For nearly a century, programs have been designed to help youth and teens step outside their routines and into something more meaningful. In fact, our 100th Year Anniversary is happening this year!
Explore the Same Landscapes Through Cottonwood Gulch Summer Camp Treks
Many of the places described in the article are part of the same landscapes explored on Cottonwood Gulch treks. These programs give children, teens, and families the opportunity to experience those environments firsthand.
Here are a few of the treks that bring those places to life:

Prairie Trek
The Prairie Trek is one of the original Cottonwood Gulch programs and remains a cornerstone of the summer camp experience. For nearly 100-years this program has introduced young people to the great outdoors.
Trekkers travel through a wide range of Southwestern landscapes, from mesas and canyons to historic sites and remote wilderness areas. Along the way, they learn about geology, ecology, and the cultures that have shaped the region.

Go! Trek
GO Trek, no experience required, one-week basecamp experience designed to spark a love of the outdoors in 9-11 year olds. Designed for Trekkers ready to spend 7-days away from home, discovering what it feels like to immerse themselves in the great outdoors.

Youth participants on a Cottonwood Gulch Expeditions Summer Trek exploring the canyons, mountains, and forests of the American Southwest. Experiential learning through backpacking, hiking, hands-on science, cultural exploration, and community building. Empowering independence, responsibility, and connection to nature since 1926.
Mountain Desert Trek
The Desert Trek offers a closer look at the unique environments that define the Southwest. During six weeks of immersive back-country travel, Trekkers gain mastery surviving (and enjoying) the American Southwest.
Participants are typically older teens, ready to push their limits physically and intellectually, exploring volcanic landscapes, sandstone formations, and desert ecosystems while learning how life adapts to these conditions. For many teens, this trek builds both resilience and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Turquoise Trail Trek
For those drawn to dramatic scenery and exploration, the Turquoise Trail Trek provides young women with an immersive experience in some of the most iconic terrain in the region. The Trek is a month-long adventure for smart, curious girls who are ready for something serious.
Trekkers spend 32 days backpacking, rock climbing, and exploring the most demanding and rewarding landscapes of the American Southwest. Along the way they experience the scale and beauty of the Southwest in a way that cannot be replicated in a classroom.

At Cottonwood Gulch we pride leadership as one of our core values.
Family Trek
Families who want to share this experience together can do so through the Family Trek.
This program allows parents and children to explore the same landscapes side by side, building shared memories while experiencing the same sense of discovery described in the article.

Why These Experiences Matter for Youth and Teens
The story featured in Tumbleweeds reflects something many families already sense. Mr. Salmanson eloquently outlines the manner by which children and teens benefit from time outdoors in ways that extend far beyond the trip itself.
- They build confidence by navigating new environments.
- They develop independence by stepping away from familiar routines.
- They form lasting friendships through shared challenges and experiences.
These outcomes are not accidental. They are the result of intentional programs that prioritize exploration, responsibility, and connection. For 100-years Cottonwood Gulch has conscientiously developed a model bringing the most value to your children’s Summer experiences, while at the same time sending them home entertained and better engaged with the world around them.
From One Story to Many: A Cottonwood Gulch Summer Camp Experience For Everyone
The author’s experience is just one example of what can happen when young people are given the opportunity to explore the outdoors in a meaningful way. The path from childhood to adulthood is full of challenges, triumphs, and many-varied experiences. In some cases, perhaps the most important ones, individual experiences have an outsize effect on development.
At Cottonwood Gulch, these kinds of stories have been unfolding for generations within our programs. Participants return home with new skills, new perspectives, and a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. A great many choose to send the next generation (their children) to enjoy similar experiences.
For parents considering a summer camp for their children or teens, the question is not just where they will go.
It is who they might become along the way.
A trek through the Southwest has the potential to be more than a summer activity. It can be the beginning of a lifelong connection to nature, community, and personal growth.
